Published in 1893, Beautiful Joe was the first Canadian book to sell a million copies and was extremely popular in America, too (selling almost a million copies by 1900). A work of fiction told from the dog’s point of view, it is based upon the true story of an abused dog (in the tradition of 1877’s Black Beauty). It reflects many of the unfortunate realities of society in those days, but it had an incredible impact upon the Western world’s ideas about humane treatment of animals. Interestingly, it is still published with the author listed as Marshall Saunders. In fact, it was written by Margaret Marshall Saunders, and published using her middle name since it was felt that no one would want to buy a book written by a woman. (She was in fact the first woman to write a book which sold a million copies!) Every animal shelter and rescue organization in America and Canada owes a debt to Beautiful Joe.

A good book. I'm surprised I didn't read it 55 years ago when I was in the "dog stage" (the Big Red series, The Wild Dog of Edmonton, all of Albert Payson Terhune, and the like). I wish today's children could have the patience to read it.Each chapter deals with a different aspect of animal life and animal abuse. Many chapters feature Beautiful Joe, savagely abused by his owner; but others deal with raising chickens and the best cages for them, with getting rid of ticks, with cattle, with cats, with hunting dogs, with parrots . . . . It's no wonder that the author contributed to the formation of the ASPCA.
We know that people who abuse animals also abuse people. And the news is full of the horrors of animal abuse. Maybe if parents read a chapter or two of Beautiful Joe to their children, their children will pick up the book and continue to read it on their own. A big step above the badly written garbage that passes as young people's literature. And maybe they'd pick up some good tips on the way to treat animals and to live life.

Beautiful Joe The Autobiography of a Dog Marshall Saunders Milena Vitorovic 9781611046144 Books Reviews
I read this story as a child and recently decided to look and see if it was still available. I was surprised to learn that what I had read was an abridged version and that the author, Marshall Saunders, was really Margaret Marshall Saunders, and that it was a true account of cruelty, rescue, and justice.
The story is told through Joe’s eyes. The second half of the story, which you miss in the Children’s version, has case after case of cruelty and kindness. When Joe and his mistress, Laura Morris, spend the summer on her uncle’s farm, the story becomes a showcase for organizations and people that deal with this problem that is still somewhat rampant in the late 19th century. It also allows for the changing perspective on how animals and livestock should be treated – not as mere, unfeeling property, or unintelligent life, but just the opposite. Sheep are still raised and sold for slaughter, but Laura’s uncle is assured that they will be treated humanely to the end.
The story is made a little tedious by its anecdotal style, but appropriate for the child with good focus and attention span. The abridged version, however, is perfect for all children, and both have a strong anti-cruelty message. While the author wrote many stories, she is best known for Beautiful Joe, which sold over a million copies worldwide. Ms. Saunders championed many social issues for which she was accorded recognition; she received awards for the treatment of this subject from The American Humane Education Society. She and Joe traveled the world to promote humanitarianism.
From Sweet Joe's perspective, the author really makes this dog come alive. It's sad, but grows into a sweet book that was difficult to put down. I only stopped when I was so tired, my kindle fell on my face...four times!
Dog people will especially enjoy this book.
Being a lover of all creatures great and small, but since we don't have a fence, and I refuse to chain a dog, we have a couple of rescue cats. We also enjoy doggie-sitting for a friend's little Jack Rustle mix. (Sometimes, he even loans him to us when we just have to have a dose of "Shorty")
The book is not silly, and is definitely fun and enjoyable.
It's also a good book to read to a child, but you may wish to gloss over the beginning or parts where abuse is involved, although there's not a lot of this. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to "understand" what may be going through the mind of a very special dog.
I loved this book as a kid when I read the Whitman edition. Perhaps it was abridged. At any rate, I just read it as an adult 45 years later.
The book was not like I remembered it. Every page literally this woman went on and on eating and proselytizing either her religious views, humane treatment available views, societal problems, etc. She felt like she had a solution to everything and knew everything.
Some of her techniques were outdated and laughable of course. You could tell she was brought up in a sheltered environment and that she was very well-to-do.
I don't know how children would react to her thinking that people should be tortured for their cruelty to animals. He goes way overboard. I read the entire book because I am stubborn and always start when I finish. But it was torturous at times. She was condescending and patronizing. Very judgmental. Racist too.
She starts off by saying that most of these stories are based on truth. But they are so Outlandish that you know this is untrue.
She goes on and on about just about every farm and domesticated animal there is on this planet. A separate chapter for each. Grueling. It was very graphic and I don't know how children would react to it.
I do not recommend this book.
"Beautiful Joe An Autobiography of a Dog" was even more delightful than I'd hoped! As a longtime dog owner, I've experienced the unique bond of love, faithfulness, protectiveness, & respect between a dog & its owner. Just like relationships between humans, kindness & concern will forge a lifelong bond between animals & people. But, as this book shows so clearly, many people have no interest in learning about the needs of their pets & what happens when they fail in this area. This book is worth reading by everyone in order to learn a necessary point--those who love animals & are willing to earn an animal's trust & sustain it have many lessons to teach humans about relationships with one another. The same ingredients are necessary--kindness & earned respect. Respect is never "owed" in any relationship, including that of an "superior-subordinate." Respect MUST be earned; it can never be "demanded" as we see so many "aggrieved" people demanding these days. Beautiful Joe can teach all of us lessons for today's world. Enjoy!
